As your due date gets closer, one question comes up again and again: what do I actually need to pack for the hospital? Many mums-to-be find themselves standing in front of an empty bag with a list that is either far too long or missing the things that really matter.
So here is a checklist that is practical, written with UAE hospitals and weather in mind, and short enough to actually use.
When should you pack your hospital bag?
Aim to have your bag ready by around 36 weeks, or a little earlier if you are expecting twins or your doctor has mentioned an early delivery. Keep it by the door or in the car, so whoever drives you can grab it in a hurry.
Every hospital is a little different. Many private hospitals in Dubai already provide nappies, wipes and basic toiletries for mum and baby, so ask your hospital for its own list at your next antenatal appointment and pack around it.
Documents to bring
This is the part that is easiest to forget and hardest to sort out from a hospital bed. Keep everything together in one folder:
- Passports and Emirates IDs for both parents (originals and copies)
- Your health insurance card and any pre-approval from your insurer
- Your antenatal records and birth plan, if you have one
- Your marriage certificate, which is usually needed to register the birth (check with your hospital which version and attestation they require)
Requirements can change, so double-check the current documents with your hospital and insurer a few weeks before your due date.
Hospital bag checklist for mum
- Comfortable clothes: a loose nightdress or front-opening pyjamas (easier for feeding), a soft robe and a going-home outfit that fits you at around six months pregnant
- A warm layer and socks: hospital rooms in the UAE are often strongly air-conditioned
- Nursing bras and breast pads
- High-waisted maternity underwear and extra maternity pads (hospitals provide some, but you may prefer your own)
- Slippers or flip-flops for the corridor and shower
- Toiletries: toothbrush, lip balm (air-conditioning dries lips quickly), hair ties, a gentle face wash and moisturiser
- A long phone charger cable and a power bank
- Snacks and a refillable water bottle with a straw
- Glasses or contact lens case, and any medication you take regularly
Hospital bag checklist for baby
Newborns need less than you think, but a few soft, breathable pieces make those first days easier:
- 3 to 4 bodysuits or sleepsuits in newborn size, plus one in 0 to 3 months in case your baby is bigger than expected
- A hat, socks and mittens: newborns lose heat quickly in cool, air-conditioned rooms. Our newborn cotton hat, socks and mittens set is made for exactly this
- One or two muslin swaddles: light enough for the UAE heat outside, cosy enough for the hospital room, and handy as a burp cloth or feeding cover. See our cotton muslin swaddles
- A soft blanket for the journey home
- A going-home outfit: the one you will see in photos for years
- An infant car seat: install it in the car before your due date. UAE law requires young children to travel in a suitable car seat, and many hospitals check before you leave
Choose natural, breathable fabrics like cotton and muslin for everything that touches your baby's skin. Read more in our guide to breathable baby fabrics.
The going-home outfit: a moment to remember
Your baby's first outfit and blanket will appear in the very first family photos, so many parents choose something special. A blanket or hat embroidered with your baby's name turns those photos into keepsakes. If you have already chosen a name, a personalised baby blanket is a lovely piece to bring.
Not sure about the name yet? A soft neutral outfit and blanket in white or cream look just as beautiful in those first photos.
Hospital bag checklist for your partner
- A change of clothes and a warm layer
- Toiletries and any medication
- Phone charger and snacks
- Some cash or a card for parking and the hospital café
What you can leave at home
Many first-time parents overpack. You usually do not need a full newborn wardrobe, large packs of nappies (if your hospital provides them), jewellery or valuables, or lots of books and entertainment. Keep the bag light so it is easy to carry and easy to find things in.
A thoughtful extra: a gift for the new parents
If you are visiting friends or family after a birth, a small, useful gift is always welcome. Our baby shower and hospital gift sets combine newborn essentials with name embroidery, beautifully wrapped and delivered directly to the family anywhere in the UAE. Learn how personalisation works.
